Counseling May Improve Breast Cancer Survival

Research increasingly supports the notion that emotional, mental and physical health are very closely linked and that psychological therapy can improve a person’s overall health by effectively decreasing depression, anxiety and related symptoms, such as pain, fatigue and nausea. It can also have a positive effect on the body’s immune system. Nine out of 10 Americans surveyed by Consumer Reports said that psychological counseling helped them. Counseling is used in many situations including smoking cessation, weight management, pain management, and coping with a chronic illness.

Don't Forget the Gingko: Just Make Sure It's the Right One

In the search for ways to effectively treat people with age-related memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease, researchers have identified several ingredients that may play a role in enhancing memory and cognitive function. Among the most promising approaches are ginkgo, huperzine A and acetyl-L-carnitine. These three supplements were the focus of recent testing by ConsumerLab (CL), a consumer "watchdog" of sorts that provides independent evaluations of dietary supplements, as well as other products that affect health and nutrition, for the

A Giant Leap Forward in Stem Cell Transplantation

Topiary is the art of creating sculptures in the medium of clipped trees and shrubs. However, in modern topiary, shaped wire cages are often covered by small-leaved ivy to give the look of topiary in a shorter amount of time. This same premise is now being used in medicine. You may recall a concept study we told you about just days ago where cardiologists harvested stem cells from umbilical cord blood collected at birth and seeded them onto eight biodegradable scaffolds.

Most Americans find themselves with only lame excuses, such as they would rather be sick than go to work. Getting a flu shot is really pretty easy to obtain, inexpensive or even free, and is the best way to prevent the flu.

The Great American Smokeout

Several times a day there are many people who brave the elements, wind, rain, morning fog, an evening chill, even snow, to go outside and have a smoke. Some people forgo flying on a plane because it robs them of a few hours in which they need their nicotine fix. A smoking addiction can not only add to travel time for some, but it steals lives, creating tragedy instead of memories. Every November, the American Cancer Society (ACS) stages the “Great American Smokeout” challenging the over 45 million nicotine-addicts just in the

Early Treatment for HIV Babies Saves Lives

Earlier this year, Health News published an article concerning HIV testing during pregnancy to reduce the incidence of babies born HIV positive. The testing was encouraged to allow for the proper antiviral treatment of mothers during pregnancy to reduce babies being born with HIV. Almost exclusively mothers who are HIV positive give birth to children with the infection or pass it to their infants while breastfeeding. There were an estimated 500,000 HIV infected infants born in 2006.
