Blogathon 2006 - Change in charity (crosspost)

This is a crosspost from my personal blog at hello! yoshi

For those of you who have donated, thank you very much! Every penny counts, and no donation is too small. I've decided to change the charity I'll be doing the blogathon for. Just this past week, we received horrific news of an accident involving a very very dear friend. She lost her life that day, and in memory of her, I will be blogging the blogathon in her name for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Our friend was a true figher and passionate for finding a cure. So, the entire time I'm blogging for 24 hours, I'll be blogging for her. I don't wish to disclose any detailed information until the memorial website is created and completed, and more information is given out to the press (if needed).

I only ask that you consider becoming my sponsor to help those that can still be saved.

Please take this moment in time for silent thoughts and prayers for her.

To become my sponsor, or for more details about becoming my sponsor, visit my personal blog

Expression Engine 2.0 compatiblity

With the dev blog entry about Questions Concerning ExpressionEngine 2.0 Compatibility, some of you might be wondering if I will be converting the linklist or any other plugins I’ve created to fit with EE 2.0.

Well, I will if I have to. I only say this because will EE 2.0 have linklist/blogroll capabilities? I think so. And before you start wondering, no I haven’t gotten any word of that from anyone. I’m just predicting. But if not, then if I get a copy of the dev version of EE 2.0 to bring it up to specs, then I’ll do it. We’ll see how long till they have something for us developers though. I never anticipate any date unless it comes from the horses mouth, and well, they’re saying who knows when it’ll be ready to go out there.

So there you go, I thought I’d throw that out there before people who are using linklist now wonder if there was going to be a linklist 2.0.

Facebook killing personal blogging?

Stuart Dredge made a post on Tech Digest : Opinion: Facebook is killing personal blogging.

In many ways, I agree that Facebook is changing the web. In other ways, I don’t agree with some of what he said, although it’s not wrong, it’s just a difference in opinion.

He mentions twitter and he’s of the opinion that Twitter is being overrun by facebook. But honestly, I don’t think Facebook has much to do with that. I’m leaning towards Pownce as a micro-blogging tool, and I think most people who use pownce will tell you that after using it, they just don’t care as much about twitter.

But there’s no denying that Facebook is gaining popularity. I can say that as a social network, it has managed to get some people signed up that I would have never thought in a million years would sign up for a social networking site. And I admit it does have a lot of time wasters.

But I don’t really think it will get rid of personal blogging altogether. Personally as a blogger who’s been blogging since the beginning (1997), I’d like to think that it will just go back to what it was like, when not everyone had a blog. I think people will use facebook and such, but they’ll also blog just as much. The community will just get smaller I think. The way it used to be.

If you’re wondering, yes I have a facebook profile. Do I use it often? Honestly, no, because, I have too many blogs to keep up with. I mean, I love the occasional food fight on facebook, but honestly, it’s such a time killer, I might as well play World of Warcraft. (hmm that’s something. comparing World of Warcraft to Facebook)

Newer and cleaner show/hide script

OK i’ve really been prompted to do a better show/hide script more than once since I’ve started this site and released the original show/hide extended entries script.

So I’ve put together what you’ll need to put into your javascript, your main template, and your CSS. It’s very lightweight and should work in all modern browsers. Please if it doesn’t work, someone please tell me.

Expression Engine 1.6

If you’re running EE and didn’t already know, 1.6 is out. And it’s packed with a bunch of features. It’s really exciting.

The biggest thing I’ve seen is that Multiple Sites Manager. Now, this is where you can very neatly run separate sites with one installation of EE. As many of you already know, I’m running one copy of EE for quite a few sites. But I ran into a slight problem. It costs extra - this is not a big deal. It’s $79 for a Personal License for 3 sites and $199 for a Commercial License for 3 sites. Whew. I’m running Commercial. (only because when I bought EE, that’s the only type available!) Also, the old method of running multiple sites is now officially unsupported. They’ve already said only unsupported, not that it will break now nor in the future. Of course, they could easily change their mind with 2.0.

Right now, I would have to renew my commercial download license to download 1.6. I’m still not quite sure if I want to or not. If you are running multiple sites and have tried it out, then let me know how it’s all working out for you!

Review my blog

I’ve heard some talk here and there about the cynicism of the “Review my blog” sites. Basically, not that the review was actually meaningful, or in humour, or at the very least, an actual critique, but that those sites were basically a means to get publicity for your site, and to somehow raise your pagerank, or alexa score, or your technorati rating. Is this true? And if so, does it work?

Wordpress Plugin Directory

For the longest time, Wordpress has offered wp-plugins.org as a hosted repository for wordpress plugins. As you might have noticed, the user interface hasn’t been updated in a while. Matt has announced as part of the Extend section of the Wordpress.org site, the plugins section.

Downloads are back up

For those of you who have been looking for the various plug-ins and module for download, I’ve put them back up. You can now navigate to the downloads page, which will allow you to download the files. I’m still working on the documentation, however, so bear with me on this one!

[updated] Documentation is now complete! You can reach the documentation by going to “Help” in the navigation bar up on top.

psychodaisy.com is now haroblogger.com

As you may or may not have noticed, I’ve changed things around here. I’ve transferred posts from the old psychodaisy.com to the new site. Since consolidating all my sites into one install of EE, and exporting/importing the entries, this has caused the ID’s of the posts to change. So unfortunately, the archives from various old posts will probably not match up correctly.

I’m getting ready to get the downloads set up, so people can once again download the old plugins, modules, and extensions.

You’ll notice that there are no longer comments, that’s because any discussion will be redirected to the forums. It’s something i’m just trying out right now. So basically this will make it so only members can join in on discussions. Consider this an experiment.
