Exercise for cancer survivors

I tend to think of this weekly fitness blog as being for people who are, well, fit. I take for granted the fact that I'm healthy, active, and able to do things like run and swim without a second thought. But a New York Times article this week reminded me that for people who aren't so lucky-those who are being treated for or are recovering from cancer-fitness is just as important, if not more. As specialized exercise classes spring up around the country and doctors increasingly encourage their patients to get moving, it's becoming clear that fitness should be a part of any cancer recovery plan.

New Census figures on poverty due Tuesday

The Census Bureau on Tuesday reports new numbers on poverty, income and health insurance _ an annual snapshot of the economic well-being of American households.

The report will immediately become fodder for the presidential campaign, a kind of economic scorecard on the Bush administration.

The latest data will cover 2007, when the economy was starting to wobble. In 2006, poverty was down and income was up. But the number of uninsured was higher, and the improvements in income and poverty did not match the levels reached before President Bush took office.

Ailing Kennedy attends Democratic convention

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy told a cheering Democratic National Convention Monday night that his is 'a season of hope' for a stronger future in America, his wave familiar, his voice firm, despite his struggle against brain cancer.

And he added: 'I pledge to you that I will be there next January on the floor of the United States Senate.'

That had special meaning given the bleak prognosis he faces with his disease.

'The hope rises again and the dream lives on,' he said after his seven minutes at the microphone, minutes of high and unexpected drama for delegates waving thousands of Kennedy signs, cheering as he came and as he stepped away into the arms of his wife Vicki.

TWUSEA | The Right to Healthy Indoor Air | World Health Organization

There is a more detailed article here - http://twusea.org/blog/2008/08/22/the-right-to-healthy-indoor-air/

The principles below derive from the fundamental principles in the fields of human rights, biomedical ethics and ecological sustainability, and focus on interactions among them.

Principles

Principle 1 - Under the principle of the human right to health, everyone has the right to breathe healthy indoor air.

Principle 2 - Under the principle of respect for autonomy ("self-determination"), everyone has the right to adequate information about potentially harmful exposures, and to be provided with effective means for controlling at least part of their indoor exposures.

Principle 3 - Under the principle of non-maleficence ("doing no harm"), no agent at a concentration that exposes any occupant to an unnecessary health risk should be introduced into indoor air.

Principle 4 - Under the principle of beneficence ("doing good"), all individuals, groups and organizations associated with a building, whether private, public, or governmental, bear responsibility to advocate or work for acceptable air qualityfor the occupants.

Principle 5 - Under the principle of social justice, the socioeconomic status of occupants should have no bearing on their access to healthy indoor air, but health status maydetermine special needs for some groups.

Principle 6 Under the principle of accountability, all relevant organizations should establish explicit criteria for evaluating and assessing building air quality and its impact on the health of the population and on the environment.

Principle 7 - Under the precautionary principle, where there is a risk of harmful indoor air exposure, the presence of uncertainty shall not be used as a reason for postponing cost-effective measures to prevent such exposure.
