Exercise for cancer survivors

I tend to think of this weekly fitness blog as being for people who are, well, fit. I take for granted the fact that I'm healthy, active, and able to do things like run and swim without a second thought. But a New York Times article this week reminded me that for people who aren't so lucky-those who are being treated for or are recovering from cancer-fitness is just as important, if not more. As specialized exercise classes spring up around the country and doctors increasingly encourage their patients to get moving, it's becoming clear that fitness should be a part of any cancer recovery plan.

New Census figures on poverty due Tuesday

The Census Bureau on Tuesday reports new numbers on poverty, income and health insurance _ an annual snapshot of the economic well-being of American households.

The report will immediately become fodder for the presidential campaign, a kind of economic scorecard on the Bush administration.

The latest data will cover 2007, when the economy was starting to wobble. In 2006, poverty was down and income was up. But the number of uninsured was higher, and the improvements in income and poverty did not match the levels reached before President Bush took office.

Ailing Kennedy attends Democratic convention

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy told a cheering Democratic National Convention Monday night that his is 'a season of hope' for a stronger future in America, his wave familiar, his voice firm, despite his struggle against brain cancer.

And he added: 'I pledge to you that I will be there next January on the floor of the United States Senate.'

That had special meaning given the bleak prognosis he faces with his disease.

'The hope rises again and the dream lives on,' he said after his seven minutes at the microphone, minutes of high and unexpected drama for delegates waving thousands of Kennedy signs, cheering as he came and as he stepped away into the arms of his wife Vicki.
