Stem Cell Breakthrough

Are we on the verge of being able to heal patients using their own reprogrammed cells? A new option for stem cell treatments that could avoid the use of controversial embryos or treatment methods that risk triggering cancer may be on the horizon. Researchers at Harvard have discovered a way to convert mature cells to a form that is like an embryonic stem cell. Though much stem cell research continues to be conducted around the world, it has been a very touchy subject because of the use of embryos.

Chamomile May Help to Relieve Diabetes Woes

Tea has long been used in China as a natural remedy, used by the British as a societal prerequisite, and the proliferation of tea brands and types at your local grocery attests to Americans current love of the brew. Sure, English Breakfast tea is delicious when paired with a scone, green tea can be sipped alongside sushi, and my favorite spiced Indian chai has become a staple with the latte lovers at Starbucks; but none of these compare to the herbal healing powers of chamomile, which new research concludes could soon help diabetes patients.

Can Malaria Bite the Dust? $3 Billion Says Yes

Imagine a world where an infectious disease affects over 515 million people a year, killing 1 to 3 million people and leaving the rest having little to no way of dealing with painful symptoms like kidney failure, an enlarged liver, fever, shivering, vomiting, chills, joint pain, brain damage and even coma. New Diabetes Drug Lowers Blood Sugar, Blood Pressure, and Weight

A new drug known as Liraglutide, for use in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, has been proven to enhance blood glucose control, reduce weight and even lower blood pressure with once-daily injections. Liraglutide maker Novo Nordisk funded a one-year study, led by Dr. Alan Garber of Baylor College of Medicine, of 746 patients having early type 2 diabetes. Participants received a once-daily injection in a dose of either 1.2 mg or 1.8 mg of Liraglutide or were given a once daily oral tablet of Amaryl (glimepiride), a widely used oral anti-diabetic drug.

Grapefruit a Factor in Adverse Reactions to Many Prescription Drugs

Lately I’ve been obsessed with the scent of grapefruit. I haven’t gotten around to actually eating any grapefruit but my summer body spray smells like grapefruit, my deodorant has extract of grapefruit in it, and I have been using a new face wash which—surprise!—is made with grapefruit to help moisturize. A new study even suggests that a grapefruit’s scent might actually make you feel better and reduce your appetite.

Keep Blood Pressure at Bay, Listen to the Ocean or Mozart

During my college years, people were always telling me that listening to soothing classical music would help my concentration and allow my brain to save more of the information I was putting into it. I tried listening to Beethoven a few times on my computer speakers while reading, or putting on Chopin while writing a paper only to find myself more distracted by residents running down the hall, the television being turned on or by my own procrastinating thoughts.
