Good Immune System, Bad Stem Cell Reaction?
Stem cells have taken center stage in the scientific and research communities over the past decade. The cells' potential to heal and impede or stop the development of numerous diseases is one of the brightest prospects in medicine today. And while much advancement in the field of stem cell research have been encouraging, persisting concerns about negative immune system responses have come to the forefront of the discussion again.

Statins and Cancer Risk
Do you have high cholesterol and take a drug referred to as a statin? In recent years, there have been several reports released stating statins may lead to health problems, such as cancer. However, recently it was determined that patients' risks of getting cancer was no greater when taking statins, to lower their LDL levels, than they were at risk without the drugs.

The Payoff of Panic: The Success of Gardasil
Is Gardasil the food bunker of the new millennium? Way back in 1999, you knew someone who was nervous that their bank account would be destroyed, their perishables perished, and time as they knew it wiped out at midnight on December 31st. When nothing happened you could hear the big sigh of relief, and buyers' remorse, of everyone who stocked up their homes for weeks with dried foods and bottled water. In mid-2006, a drug was approved to vaccinate young girls from the danger of the human-papillomavirus, or HPV—the main cause of cervical cancer in women—and the media went nuts.

Vitamin D, Vitamin Deadly?
Besides being the easiest vitamin to absorb (milk, sunshine) Vitamin D may also be the one we know the least about. This glowing vitamin has been popping up all over the news lately: as a preventative measure for colon, prostate and breast cancer, leading the fight against osteoporosis, promoting good bone health, and being lit up in the headlines that we, as a world, are at risk for deficiency. However, deficiency may not be the only problem faced in the news surrounding this common supplement.

Genetic Traits Link to Bipolar Disorder
Two genes in the brain that control the activity of the nerve cells may play a big role in a person's risk for developing bipolar disorder, which is marked by dramatic swings from being depressed to manic behavior and affects between one and three percent of the population worldwide. While identifying these genes is important, it is not expected that it will lead to a genetic test for the risk of bipolar disorder. It could, however, help unravel the mystery of how it arises and could lead to better treatments

The Scent of Cancer Could Lead to Early Detection
Imagine being able to detect cancer through smell. It is certainly within the realm of possibility. The human skin releases chemicals known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in differing amounts, which in turn generates unique scents. And while our noses are unable to detect them, a canine's sensitive nose can. Dogs have been trained to "sniff out" tumors and to detect changes in the odor of urine, which could indicate bladder cancer. Researchers now hope to use this premise to develop a noninvasive test to diagnose skin cancer.

B Vitamins Ineffective in Reducing the Risk of Heart Attack, Stroke and Death
Often referred to as the "happy vitamins," B vitamins have many positive effects on our bodies. They are essential for the breakdown of carbohydrates into glucose, which provides us energy, for the breakdown of fats and proteins, which aids in the normal functioning of the nervous system and digestive tract and for the proper formation of every cell in the body, including nerve and blood cells. B vitamins have been shown to prevent birth defects and to reduce or eliminate symptoms of depression, anemia and Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS).
