Strength Training Games for Young Children

Remember those physical fitness testing days in elementary school? I tried to avoid them with fictional stomachaches and sore throats. My muscular strength (the greatest amount of force a muscle can exert in a single effort) was sorely lacking. My muscular endurance (the ability of a muscle to perform repeated movements for an extended period of time) was barely measurable. This led a to a serious lack of confidence during P.E. testing days.

Breast Cancer MRI: Is It Necessary?

Breast cancer is diagnosed in nearly 185,000 Americans each year and kills close to 41,000, according to estimates by the American Cancer Society. Since early detection is of paramount importance, yearly mammograms are recommended starting at age 40. Because it is more sensitive, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the breast is recommended, in addition to the yearly mammography, for younger women at high risk of developing breast cancer, such as those who test positive for the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene, or who have a strong family history of breast or ovarian cancer.

Antibody May Help Lower Blood Sugar in Type 2 Diabetes Patients

An experimental antibody has been shown to lower blood sugar in type 2 diabetes patients with a single dose. These encouraging results have been indicated by early-stage trials. Xoma Ltd., a Berkeley, California based biotechnology company, has developed an injectable drug, known as XOMA 052, that could potentially improve blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes patients with as little as one dose per month. The antibody works by blocking interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta), a protein that causes inflammation-linked to damage of insulin-producing cells called islet cells.

MRSA Education Initiative Launched by CDC

You’ve seen it on the news, read it in the papers and on the internet—methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is spreading. Once largely occurring among patients in hospitals and nursing homes, it is becoming more common in community settings. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that Americans make more than 12 million doctor visits each year for skin infections typical of those caused by staph bacteria, and in some areas of the country, more than half of the skin infections are MRSA.

Vitamin B12 Linked to Brain Shrinkage

Vitamin B12 is an essential water-soluble vitamin which helps maintain healthy nerve cells, red blood cells and is also needed to help make DNA, the genetic material in all cells. This vitamin is naturally found in foods that come from animals, including fish, meat, poultry, eggs, milk and milk products.
