RIA and Cloud Computing Apps

We are using software applications more than ever before. As the demand for new capabilities and functions grows, companies strive to provide an adequate response to business needs. The rate of application evolution places an ever-larger burden on the shoulders of software producers, vendors, and even consumers. In addition, much of the costly software used by organizations was not designed to respond to a rapidly changing marketplace or highly dispersed workforce, requiring its substitution or modernization.

Resolving RIA-SOA Conflict

From the first days of Rich Internet Application (RIA) technology, many enthusiasts found an analogy between RIA and service-oriented architecture (SOA). Some of them talked about the benefits of a would-be-wonderful use of SOA in RIA; others saw RIA as a SOA face. Nonetheless, there are experts who see a discrepancy between RIA and SOA concepts.

The Soul of the Web - Why AJAX Standards Matter

I spoke on a panel at Mashup Camp this week on why Ajax Standards matter. I was quoted by Doug Henschen of Intelligent Enterprise as saying that we are locked in a struggle for the soul of the web, so I thought I would expand on that theme. Just because the web has been open so far doesn't mean that it will stay that way. By open, I mean that content has been searchable, linkable and servable without paying fees.

AJAX 2009: More Choices, Tough Decisions

The story of software development in the last few years has been driven by the need to provide a good user experience without installation issues and update woes. For some people that has meant building "smart client" applications, as promoted by Microsoft. For others, that has meant building rich Internet applications (RIAs) using technologies such as AJAX, Microsoft Silverlight, and Adobe Flash and Flex.

DataServices World 2008 West: SOA, WOA and Cloud Computing - The New Frontier for Data Services

Data services, contends Rob Steward, Vice President of Research and Development at DataDirect Technologies, are critical to the predominant and emerging architectures we're embracing for building new systems. "Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is becoming a standard enterprise architecture and Web-Oriented Architecture (WOA) is enabling organizations to pull together data from multiple sources and services," notes Steward, who will be presenting in the Keynote Hall at The Fairmont Hotel on November 20, 2008. "Cloud computing is an architecture that provides high-performance computing, massive data storage and scalability at commodity pricing," he adds.

Aptana Releases Jaxer 1.0 AJAX Server

Aptana has announced the 1.0 release of Aptana Jaxer and the introduction of Jaxer Pro, both “AJAX servers” that let developers create entire web applications using the ubiquitous set of languages common to web browsers: JavaScript, DOM, CSS, and HTML. To achieve this, Jaxer embeds the open source Mozilla Firefox browser engine within a server so that developers can have the same execution environment on the application server as they have in the web browser – a simplification of web technologies that reduces complexity in the development and management of web applications. Jaxer is free, open source software. Jaxer Pro provides the same technology under a commercial license with support from Aptana.
